yakuza at 30fps is a bummer
the reason i stopped yakuza posting on here is because a) i moved b) i own yakuza 6 on ps4 which never got any sort of ps5 patch/framerate unlock. so despite having a ps5 i have to deal with 30, barf. to be honest the framerate isn't even the biggest bummer for me, it's the resolution. it's 1080p which is fine but there's basically no anti-aliasing, so the world just looks really jittery.
but no, the actual biggest bummer is smaller dialogue scenes. when you're watching a "important" cutscene, the game is beautiful, genuinely. some of the smaller dialogue scene still look good, with expressive faces and animated character movements. but sadly, most dialogue scenes are neither. instead you get static characters with mouth flaps. it's really lame and just takes me out of the experience.
it's hard to describe without just linking a video, so i'm going to just do that. first we have a random dialogue scene from yakuza 0.
the letterboxing certainly helps makes things feel more cinematic, but you also have sagawa smoking, cocking his eyebrow, majima making a drink, etc. meanwhile, here's a scene of similar importance in yakuza 6.
this is one of the better examples, but it's still pretty weak in it's execution. you do have some appropriate music and some showy camera tilts and cuts, but every time you have to watch kiryu or the cop talk, it just falls flat. i just hope this is a yakuza 6 specific issue, i guess.
